The only authors that I heard of on the list were Harry Harrison and Raj Patel. Harrison's Make Room, Make Room was the book that they based the awful but classic sf film: Soylent Green and probably his best known work to the masses. His two series of books, "The Stainless Steel Rat" and "Bill, the Galactic Hero" are both hilarious parodies(slight) on the modern hero mythos.
